Glenfiddich

Glenfiddich (Valle de los ciervos en gaélico) es una destilería de whisky escocés de malta situada en Dufftown, Escocia, en la región de Speyside. Pertenece a William Grant & Sons. 



La destilería Glenfiddich fue fundada en 1886 por William Grant en Dufftown, Escocia, en el valle del río Robbie Dhu.

  

La primera gota de whisky Glendfiddich salió de los alambiques de la destilería el día de Navidad de 1887.​ Tras los momentos difíciles de la década de 1960 y 1970, muchos pequeños destiladores independientes fueron comprados o salieron del negocio. Para sobrevivir, William Grant & Sons amplió su producción de bebida, e introdujo las campañas de publicidad, un centro de visitantes y desde 1957 el whisky escocés embotellado en sus distintivas botellas de forma triangular.

Más tarde, William Grant & Sons fue una de las primeras compañías en envasar sus botellas en tubos y latas de regalo. También fue una de las primeras en reconocer la importancia de las tiendas libres de impuestos para las bebidas espirituosas. Esta estrategia de marketing fue un éxito, y Glenfiddich se ha convertido en el single malt más vendido del mundo. Es vendido en 180 países, representando un 35% de las ventas mundiales de single malt. Glenfiddich es el único whisky escocés de Speyside o Highland que es destilado, madurado y embotellado en una única destilería. Al igual que otras destilerías, como Glen Grant y Glenmorangie, Glenfiddich usa una fuente natural de agua del manantial de Robbie Dhu.

Glenfiddich es madurado en barricas de roble, como barriles de ron de Cuba (en el caso del 21 años), barriles de bourbon americano (18 años), barriles nuevos de roble o de vino de jerez ("Sherry") español (15 años).​

Glenfiddich XX

Glenfiddich produce un licor llamado simplemente Glenfiddich Malt Whisky Liqueur de 40% de graduación alcohólica, vendido en botellas de medio litro. Este licor es exportado a mercados como Estados Unidos. Es difícil encontrarlo fuera de los minoristas especializados.

• En 1996, en la película Swinger, el whisky Glenfiddich es el whisky de malta favorito del los personajes.
• Glenfiddich es la bebida favorita del Inspector Morse.
• Glenfiddich aparece en la serie de televisión americana Dexter, en el que es compartido por los personajes de Ellen Wolf y Maria LaGuerta. También los utiliza el asesino Trinity en la temporada cuatro.
• En un episodio de Family Guy, Brian y Stewie se quedan encerrados en la cámara de un banco y se beben una botella de Glenfiddich para matar el tiempo.
• En "The Whole Nine Yards" el personaje de Matthew Perry bebe Glenfiddich.
• En la serie Suits, temporada 1 (2011), episodio 4, Jessica bebe un vaso de Glenfiddich y el personaje principal Harvey lo prueba y lo reconoce instantáneamente.

Jura

Jura elixir, 12 años

Jura (en gaélico escocés, Diùra) es una isla de las Hébridas Interiores, en Escocia. Se encuentra ubicada al noreste de la isla de Islay y está separada de la costa escocesa por el estrecho de Jura (Sound of Jura). La isla ha sido designada como una National Scenic Area, que es un estatuto de conservación especial en el Reino Unido.

Tiene un área de 366,96 km², por lo tanto es de un tamaño similar a Islay, pero mucho menos densamente poblada, pues tiene alrededor de 180 habitantes. El mayor asentamiento es Craighouse en la costa este. El villorio de Craighouse es sede de la única destilería de la isla, donde se hace el whisky de Jura. En la villa también está el único hotel, taller y capilla.

Jura tastival

Es extraño que por el tamaño de Jura, la población y la cercanía con las tierras escocesas, no exista una conexión marítima. Sin embargo hay una pequeña nave que opera entre Port Askaig, al sur de Islay, y Feolin Ferry, en Jura.

Jura, whisky, one for the road

En la isla predominan tres colinas cónicas en el lado oeste (son llamados Paps of Jura) y tienen una altura máxima de 762 m. En el occidente de Jura no hay asentamientos permanentes de habitantes. En esta parte existen angostas playas formadas por la erosión de las olas y conforman plataformas cortadas en la orilla del mar que tienen alturas variables sobre el nivel de las aguas.

Antes, el fin del camino se hallaba en Barnhill, la casa del novelista George Orwell, donde él terminó su gran obra maestra "Mil novecientos ochenta y cuatro" (Nineteen Eighty-Four).

Jura Superstition

Aparte de la conexión de la isla Jura con Orwell, quizás sea más conocida por el notorio evento ocurrido el 23 de agosto de 1994, donde los músicos Bill Drummond y Jimmy Cauty, de la banda KLF, se filmaron a ellos mismos quemando un millón de libras esterlinas en billetes en un cobertizo para botes en desuso.

Turas-Mara 

Entre la punta norte de Jura y la isla de Scarba se encuentra el golfo de Corryvreckan, donde los torbellinos hacen que el paso sea difícil cuando hay ciertos niveles en la marea.

En la isla habita una gran cantidad de ciervos rojos (Cervus elaphus) y se cree que el nombre de Jura deriva de hjörtr, palabra nórdica para designar "ciervo". Hirsch en alemán, Reh.

Paps de JuraEditar

En inglés paps significa "pezón", "mama", y estas montañas tienen aquella peculiar forma. Son un grupo de montañas cónicas de cuarcita y dominan toda la mitad sur de la isla. Los mayores picos son:

• Beinn an Òir (gaélico, montaña de Oro), es la más alta elevación, alcanzando los 785 m.

• Beinn Shiantaidh (gaélico, montaña Sagrada) su altura es de 735 m.

• Beinn a' Chaolais (gaélico, montaña del Sonido) es el más bajo de estos cerros, sólo por un metro de diferencia con Beinn Shiantaidh (734 m).

Las paps dominan todo el paisaje de la región y pueden ser vistas desde Mull of Kintyrey, en un día claro, desde Skye e Irlanda del Norte.

Dhalwinnie

Dalwhinnie Distillery, situated in the Highland village of Dalwhinnie in Scotland, produces Single Malt Scotch Whisky. Dalwhinnie refers to its own whisky as a Highland Whisky but as it is located within both the Highland and Speyside region it can legally be called either a Highland or Speyside whisky. It is owned by Diageo.

The site for the distillery was chosen for its access to clear spring water from Lochan-Doire-Uaine and abundant peat from the surrounding bogs. Set in splendid mountain scenery, Dalwhinnie is the highest distillery in Scotland at 1,164 ft (355 m) above sea level. The name Dalwhinnie is derived from Gaelic word Dail Chuinnidh, which means meeting place, referring to the meeting of ancient cattle drovers' routes through the mountains. 1897: John Grant of Grantown-on-Spey, George Sellar of Kingussie, and designer Alexander Mackenzie, also of Kingussie and already a designer of a distillery there, put up an estimated £10,000 to build the Strathspey Distillery at Dalwhinnie between the Great North Road and the Highland Railway.

1898: In February production begins but by the summer the venture was already in liquidation. In October A. P. Blyth buys the distillery for his son and renames it Dalwhinnie announcing ‘considerable improvements on the building and plant’. 1905: The largest distillers in the U.S.A., Cook and Bernheimer, buy the distillery at auction for just £1,250. Many fear the take-over of the Scotch whisky industry. A huge warehouse in Leith blends Dalwhinnie with other whiskies ‘to suit the American palate’. 1919: Prohibition hits America. Dalwhinnie returns to Scottish hands; they are those of Sir James Calder, chairman of Macdonald Greenlees, also blenders in Leith.

1926: Macdonald Greenlees is itself acquired; by the Distillers Company Ltd. (DCL). Dalwhinnie gains its fifth owner in under thirty years and is licensed to James Buchanan and Co. (famous for the Black and White and Buchanan blends).  

1934: A fire in the early hours of February 1st closes the distillery for four years; perhaps coincidentally this is also the year in which electricity first comes to the village, replacing paraffin lamps. 1937: As rebuilding continues, winter snowdrifts 20 ft (6.1 m) high hamper work. 1938: After four years Dalwhinnie re-opens in April, rebuilt and refreshed… 1940: …and shuts again, in common with most distilleries, as a result of wartime restrictions on their use of barley. 1961: The wash stills are converted to steam heating from a coal-fired boiler. 1968: The maltings cease production. Barley is now brought in from specialist maltsters for greater control over peatiness and alcohol yield. 1969: British Rail closes the distillery’s private siding; Dalwhinnie whiskies now leave for the south by road. 1972: Oil-firing replaces coal as modernization continues. 1987: The distillery becomes part of United Distillers. United Distillers was a Scottish company formed in 1987 combining the businesses of Distillers Company and Arthur Bell & Sons, both owned by Guinness. During a modernisation of the Dalwhinnie plant the traditional worm tubs were removed and shell and tube condensers installed. 1989: Dalwhinnie 15 year old becomes one of the Six Classic Malts of Scotland. 1991: New visitor centre opens. 1994: Dalwhinnie is confirmed by the Met. Office as having the coldest average recorded temperature (6.0 C) of any inhabited region in Scotland and probably the U.K. 1995: Distillery refitted. Traditional worm tubs are reinstated, having been removed several years earlier. 1997: Diageo was formed in 1997 from the merger of Guinness and Grand Metropolitan and Dalwhinnie became part of the drinks giant’s portfolio. 1980: The Dalwhinnie Distillers Edition 1980 is released; a second maturation in Oloroso sherry seasoned casks brings out still more depth of character. 1998: A special centenary bottling of Dalwhinnie 15 year old commemorates Dalwhinnie’s 100th anniversary. 1999: Dalwhinnie 15 Year old and the Dalwhinnie Distillers Edition 1981 are both awarded Monde Selection Gold Medals. 2004: Dalwhinnie 15 year old wins a Gold Medal at the International Wine and Spirit Competition. 2009: Dalwhinnie 15 year old wins Gold (Best in Class) International Wine & Spirit Competition. 2010: Dalwhinnie Manager’s Choice 1992 is released. Dalwhinnie Distillers Edition wins Gold in the Scotch Whisky Masters 2010 Highlands and Islands Special Edition 2015: Dalwhinnie Distillery Visitor Centre is awarded 5 Stars by the Scottish Tourist Board 2016: Dalwhinnie 15 year Old wins Gold in the San Francisco World Spirits Competition 2016.
